Serenity
Serenity is an exploration of inner calm - a quiet in-between space where time seems to stand still.
A moment of surrender, in which the world around us fades into nothing more than a soft hum in the background.
In this drawing, I search for that rare instant when everything comes to rest: thoughts, expectations, sounds. For a single breath, there exists only presence, carried by silence.
The woman’s closed eyes and relaxed facial expression form the heart of this serenity. There is no escape, no resistance, only acceptance. As if the breath slows to a sigh, as if every sense turns inward, making room for a deep, inner peace.
In this work, I aimed to capture what often slips away: the power of surrender, of consciously choosing calm instead of being swept along by the flow of stimuli and expectations.
The inspiration for Serenity partly comes from Picasso’s Le Rêve, in which a woman is depicted in a dreamy, almost weightless pose. But while Picasso uses vivid colors and bold shapes to convey the dream world, I deliberately chose graphite - a medium suited to subtlety, nuance, and quiet. No boldness or color contrasts, only shades of gray that enhance the fragility and softness of the moment. Where Le Rêve is visually loud, Serenity is whisperingly present.
Graphite allows me to capture silence. Every mark on the paper is created slowly, built up layer by layer with care and patience. No quick gestures or dramatic contrasts, only soft transitions and restrained strength. Just as serenity requires time to emerge, working with graphite demands presence and stillness. In that slowness, space arises for nuance - for the unspoken that lives between the lines.
Serenity invites the viewer to pause. To not only look, but to feel. The deep layer of calm that underlies everything - subtle, yet unmistakable - is made visible in this work. Not as an escape, but as a coming home to oneself.
An invitation to breathe, to simply be.
