Emotions

Emotions is a snapshot of an inner experience - feelings that unfold deep within but gradually surface. The closed eyes and the furrowed brow suggest an intense emotion - whether pain, sorrow, contemplation, or strength remains open to interpretation. This work shows how emotions are expressed not only through words, but also through body language.

The choice of graphite contributes to the rawness and immediacy of the drawing. The coarse grain of the paper

contrasts with the soft transitions, creating a sense of layering that reflects the complexity of emotions. The right side

of the face seems to almost dissolve into shadow, as if the image moves between presence and absence - a visual metaphor for how emotions can at times feel overwhelmingly present, and at other times slip away into something elusive.

The expression in this work is not clearly defined. The gaze is hidden, inviting the viewer to form their own interpretation. Is it a moment of release? Of tension? Or perhaps of complete surrender to a feeling? This openness makes the work universally recognizable - everyone experiences moments when emotions take over and all thoughts fall silent. The inspiration did not arise from a single moment, but from an accumulation of (unconscious) memories that built up within me: experiences from my own past that resurfaced, a moment in which I myself was caught between pain and acceptance.

While working with light and shadow, I discovered how the tension in the face came alive. The rough texture, the contrasts, and the interplay between softness and intensity gave the image a depth I had not consciously planned, but which developed organically. Sometimes art is a search - a dialogue between the material and the invisible that seeks to reveal itself.
